I got fired this morning.
Kind of saw it coming, but, at least it's over!

That is devastating and I imagine a little frightening.
Can you tell us what happened and how we can help you ease your pain?

I filed a complaint with the EEOC; plus, I emailed the CEO of my (now former) Company. I am going to keep everything in confidence, at least for now. I do hope to "reconcile" with my former employer someday!!

Sorry to hear about this Jehanne. I don't know all the details, but if you've done nothing wrong you have rights to protect you. Hope you get justice. Celia xx

Thanks, Celia! I'll let everyone know how things turn out. The HR rep said that the Company will not contest unemployment; now, what does that say??

Re: I got fired this morning.
If you are in the States, and live in one of the states with 'at-will' employment it typically means they did not fire you for cause.Jehanne wrote:The HR rep said that the Company will not contest unemployment; now, what does that say??
An employer in an at-will state can fire any employ not subject to an employment contract any time for any reason. Termination for cause:
If you receive a termination letter, with or without severance pay -MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND FULLY WHAT YOU ARE GIVING UP OR ARE AGREEING TO IN THE LETTER. Never give up the right to file for unemployment, regardless of the amount offered in the termination letter.Termination for cause is serious business. Employers and employees have many reasons for parting ways, but employment termination for cause is not a desirable outcome - for either the employer or the employee. Termination for cause generally occurs when an employee makes a severe error in actions or judgment.
Termination for Cause
When an employee's employment is terminated for cause, the employment is terminated for a reason which is given to the employee and stated in the termination letter.
Termination for cause can occur for any actions that an employer considers being grave misconduct. Examples of such situations include these.
Violation of the company code of conduct or ethics policy,Failure to follow company policy,Breach of contract, Violence or threatened violence,Threats or threatening behavior,Stealing company money or property,Lying,Falsifying records,Extreme insubordination,Harassment,Failing an alcohol or drug test,Conviction for some crimes, orWatching pornography online.
These are not the only reasons why an employer might fire an employee for cause. Every time I think I've seen it all, an employee proves me wrong. So, an exhaustive list is impossible. If you plan to terminate an employee's employment for cause, you may wish to talk with your attorney about any extraordinary circumstances or situations.

Jehanne, if you live in The Bay Area, contact me off-line. I can direct you to one of several very experienced employment attorneys.
If you believe you were terminated for being transwhatever, there are many groups that may be able to provide legal assistance for you. I contribute (small amounts) to the Transgender Law Center in San Francisco.

It's been exactly a week, and had my first contract IT job this morning. It was short, doing a simple install of an emergency response unit for a retired person. But, I feel so much better now!!

I was 'asked' to find other employment while I was working for a small CPA firm in 1984. I looked at what I wanted to do and jumped off the employment curb and started my own homebuilding business and managed to build 25 homes before the economy hit me again in 1989.Jehanne wrote:It's been exactly a week, and had my first contract IT job this morning. It appears you now have a chance to get out from under someone else's thumb - take it AND GOOD LUCK!

Re: I got fired this morning.
Well, good for you Jehanne, I hope you get lots of work. Sometimes I honestly think that the best thing that could happen to me would be to be fired. Then I would have to bite the bullet and do antiques full time. I just keep carrying on and the swines, (not really bless them), have always supported me to the hilt. I tell myself, yes maybe next year I retire, take my HTB and NHS pensions and make the jump. But I am always too scared to actually do it.....
My Home Office, (HTB racecourse division, previous job), pension comes in at 60, just over two years away. I'd be very silly not to make the big jump then. I have the stock, lots of knowledge in certain fields of antiques and I'm sure I could do it, it's just being like wrapped in cotton wool in the NHS for so long, that makes me feel it would be such a leap of faith.
Miki clearly has business acumen, I was going to comment about her hero Joe on the other thread, but Miki, your success in breaking out on your own and procuring such a land deal for the Defense Department, is amazing. You are a business Goddess Michaela.
Best of luck Jehanne, I may join you as an entrepreneur in a couple of years, though I will be looking at things back in time and you looking at stuff moving forward! IT is a thriving business and there will always, always, be work in every aspect of it, and more importantly, IT and IS can only widen and grow.....

And, some more good news!! Where I live (Iowa), self-employment does NOT impact unemployment benefits!!! And, so, am almost back to my weekly wage!!!!

Re: I got fired this morning.
can relate somewhat.
back in may I forced myself to go back to work early after a bad sinus infection, my manager took extreme exception to my having taken any time off so he set me up with an impossible schedule even for if I had been at 110% and told me to get all of it done before the day was over or get fired, so, I quit on the spot.
been out of work since.

Re: I got fired this morning.
I was out on a final written warning last week. Of which I am conflicted.
One the one hand, a girl's gotta eat. On the other, I working for poundstrecher. Which, anyone who's seen the recent ch.4 documentary recently knows, are probably the most incompetent retail company to work for.
But I have to get two buses a day to get to the shop, in a for awful council estate in East hull. I am such a West hull girl. I'm also a strapping six footer, who in male more is thrust forth to deal with whichever scumbag is shoplifting from us today.
Some kid got beaten with an iron bar round the corner for being gay, imagine what would happen if they found out that the fella turfing then out is a gorgeous trans woman. I can't possibly transition from a till up Preston road.
